Bug Out at the Library!

Colorful and inviting science corner for small children

Specially selected picture books, child friendly seating and an activity table are all part of our new science installation for kids at Lochwood.

This year the Lochwood Branch Library was chosen as one of the beneficiaries of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission grant bestowed upon the Dallas Public Library for the implementation of Every Child Ready to Read 2.0.  Children’s Librarian, Ms. Nora, held 4 “Fun with Math and Science” storytimes this winter and spring and as a result, we were allowed to purchase some brand new things for our children’s area that just came in this month (April 2013)!   We decided to stick to the theme of science and chose to “Bug Out” our area.

First, we purchased a rubber insect filled magnetic sand table.  Children have really enjoyed using the magnets to move the insects through the sand.  We also bought a beautiful caterpillar rug that has the full alphabet in both capital and lowercase letters.  Our last purchase was a giant rainbow caterpillar shaped floor cushion for the children to sit on while they read their bug books.  He is already beloved by both customers and staff.  We also set up a special bug themed book display and decorated the children’s area with lots of bug themed items.
