Raptors of Texas

Raptors of Texas presented by the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center!

Raptors-of-TexasOn Thursday, June 27th, six raptors from the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center made an appearance for 150 children and adults at the Lochwood Branch Library. Live raptors, raptors including the American Kestrel, an Eastern Screech Owl, the Barred Owl, and a Mississippi Kite were brought to the library.

A Raptor Center volunteer informed us about the decreasing habitat in North Texas for raptors. We learned some of the many benefits of raptors, such as how they keep the number of bugs and mice under control.

Our audience heard some of the birds’ distinctive calls, and learned how the birds hear, catch their food, and sleep.

Many participants commented on how much they enjoyed seeing the raptors.  “Thank you” to the Lochwood Branch Library Friends for funding this special program as part of the Mayor’s Summer Reading Club.
