Wondering what an Altered Book is?

Catch our altered book exhibit throughout the month of May in the display cabinet at the library. Sculptures, journals, albums, and functional art all made from orphaned books are included.

Lochwood Branch Library Friends and the library staff recently presented a series of fun activities related to book altering for adults, teens and children.

In February, a free collage workshop for adults was taught by Dallas artist and recycling specialist, Vet.

March was filled with activities: East Dallas artist Kim Worthington taught a free altered book-painting workshop. Library staff had a Spring Break Fun Altered Book Art make-and-take event for children and a Journal Making skills workshop for teens.

Perhaps you’ve never even heard of this imaginative type of art: it’s a form of upcycling that is all about recrafting disposable books into art or utilitarian objects. A torn children’s book, outdated textbook or an unwanted book with yellowed pages…all of these are useful again for making altered books.
